How did the historical/religious climate of the time influence theatre in this time period? Did theatre perform a purpose related to that climate? How?
There was a religious group called Confrerie de la Passion that would perform religious plays. In Paris, around 1547, religious plays were banned. The Confrerie de la Passion built the Hotel de Bourgogne (before religious plays were banned).
Stage sets were supposed to look historical, but because most actors had to provide their own costumes (which were modern day clothing items), the set and the costumes sometimes clashed between time periods.
